President's Message Ausgust 09

Tamba Thomas
Every now and then, people are united by a common cause. The principles that underpin equality and the fundamental human rights were formulated by people who stood up for justice and equality.
The days that are upon us are compelling. All mankind are the same; we feel, we rejoice, we hope and we can succeed with the right support.
Many at times, we live our whole life without making a mark. We conceal our talents the best kept secrets in town. All of us can make a difference by doing little things, investing time in others and sharing our gifts.
M-YES has identified the need to support and help our youth from multicultural background to understand the opportunities that Australia presents and to empower them to embrace these opportunities. Most of these young people are orphans and were subject to gross human right violations. Just having them in Australia, does not erase their frightful past. We need to say YES to supporting them.
One can sense the desire of young people from CALD background to succeed. However, they need help in understanding how to get started, how to stick to a pathway until completion of a course or a career and the importance of hardwork. Sometimes, they only need a friend, a mentor, someone to look up to, an inspiration or simply HOPE that the worse is over. We sometimes take these things for granted. I have seen firsthand, the current destructive trends that set to befall our young boys and girls:
teenage pregnancy, poor self esteem, criminal conduct and drug abuse, depression, suicide, family breakdown, etc.
We can circumvent long term disharmony that will stem from prolonged isolation and hopelessness, sustained discrimination and systemic marginalisation. M-YES is sounding the warning trumpet. We can see the issues precipitating in various forms all over Australia. Between now and 5 years, things will be different in Australia if no action is taken. The investment we undertake now will lead to a balanced and somewhat equitable outcome in jobs, inter-racial and intercultural harmony, and most of all, a bunch of productive individuals who might otherwise end up in correctional services or worse.
My call to all is to join hands and unite to help young people get started with their new life and stay on the path to success.
Do not hide your talent, the time you give will not be in vane. Send us mail regarding what you can do.
Thanks for partnering with us as we do the little things that make a big difference.
