The Gallery of Modern Art is considered one of the most innovative artistic spaces in Australia, with 16,000 works inside it’s glassy walls.
Perched on the banks of the Brisbane River, this building alone is an art form, and your artistic senses will be buzzing before you’ve even walked through the main doors.

2. City Hop!
The CityHopper service allows you to rediscover Brisbane for free with ferries running every 30 minutes between 6am and midnight, seven days a week. The CityHopper travels along the Brisbane River, stopping at North Quay, South Bank 3, Maritime Museum, Thornton Street, Eagle Street Pier, Holman Street, Dockside and Sydney Street terminals. As the CityHopper is free, all you need to do is hop on and hop off and enjoy taking in the Brisbane River and city sights.

If you’re up for a little Hollywood escapism, have a cinematic experience that doesn’t cost the earth. The Cineplex cinema, located at South Bank, offers movies for less than rental DVD prices.
Cost: Cheap Tuesdays is how the locals do it with adults costing $6.50 all day and night. If you don’t want to go on a school night, it’s $8.50 on weekends, leaving plenty of change for a choc top and popcorn.

Jan Powers is the matriarch of the markets at Queen St. Serving up everything from middle eastern falafel pockets, hot smoked salmon, to homemade pan fried gnocchi, there isn’t a shortage of culinary curiosities to tuck into in Brisbane.
Cost: Entry is free and expect lunch to set you back $10-12.

If free comedy and music gigs get your motor running, Brisbane’s Powerhouse is where you need to be on a Friday night. More Indie than a vintage Olympus camera, the Powerhouse is an architectural re-tread having once supplied electricity to Brisbane’s entire tramway system before being transformed into a venue for music, theatre and comedy.
On Fridays, you’ll find free (good) comedy and can sit, and chill out with views over the river.

Location: New Farm – Power house theatre7. Mt-Coot-tha
You don’t have to travel far out of town to find lush forest for bush walking. Check out the panoramic city views from Mt Coot-tha. You can either drive up and enjoy the views from the top or lace up your hiking boots for a bit of huffy-puffy through a national park and get back to nature by hiking your way up to the top.

8. City Hall Tour
Turn back the time to the Gatsby era and check out the refurbishment of City Hall, with a free guided tour. With marble stairs, a pressed ceiling and ornate balustrades, this magnificent Brisbane monument has been restored to its former glory just last year.
Inside City Hall is the Museum of Brisbane, which is well worth a poke around. Their exhibitions on the top floor are completely free and ever changing. You can honestly spend a whole morning in this place without leaving City Hall’s sandstone doors.
Cost: Nudda! But there is a Shingle Inn at the bottom of City Hall, which is the perfect spot to refuel with a cupcake.

It's time to get your stripey T-shirt and deck shoes out and head over to the Queensland Maritime Museum. Nestled alongside the river at South Bank, you can scamper like a deckhand on the HMAS Diamantina and experience how the crews navigated their tiny quarters and galley.
COST: It’s only $8 for a slice of nautical history.
Location: Southbank10. EAT – DRINK - REPEAT
A food fantasy exists every Friday and Saturday night (and Sunday in Summer) in the previously disused Hamilton Wharf, as Eat Street Markets open their shipping containers to hungry Brisbanites. You’ll find most of Brisbane here on any given weekend, so you’ll always feel part of the crowd.
The order of the evening is to eat, drink, eat, and repeat + there’s plenty of live music and entertainment to keep everyone occupied.
Cost: $2 entry, so you have plenty left over for spending on the edible delicacies served within.
